- The Town |
Limoux (population:
approximately 9,500) is located in the Languedoc region
(Aude) in the foothills of the Pyrenees. This picturesque
town is reputed for its carnival (January through April)
and as the home of the AOC Blanquette, the oldest sparkling
wine in the world made from Mauzax, Chenin and Chardonnay
grapes using the methode champenoise. The town skyline
is dominated by the Gothic spire of Saint Martin church
overlooking the Aude river whose source is in the Pyrenees
and runs through the town centre to the Mediterranean.

As
a midsized rural town, it offers an extensive variety
of local merchants within easy walking distance (400
meters) of the town square with its outdoor cafes. A
farmers market is also held once a week. In addition,
a number of shopping centres are accessible within five
to ten minutes by car.

The
immediate vicinity provides numerous opportunities for
hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing (category
1and 2), canoeing and kayaking and offers an extremely
rich variety of beautiful villages and examples of Romanesque
and Gothic architecture. The town is also an hour away
from the nearest ski slopes and an hour to the nearest
beach.
