Limoux (population: approximately 9,500) is located in the Languedoc region (Aude) in the foothills of the Pyrenees. This picturesque town is reputed for its carnival (January through April) and as the home of the AOC Blanquette, the oldest sparkling wine in the world made from Mauzax, Chenin and Chardonnay grapes using the methode champenoise. The town skyline is dominated by the Gothic spire of Saint Martin church overlooking the Aude river whose source is in the Pyrenees and runs through the town centre to the Mediterranean.
As a midsized rural town, it offers an extensive variety of local merchants within easy walking distance (400 meters) of the town square with its outdoor cafes. A farmers market is also held once a week. In addition, a number of shopping centres are accessible within five to ten minutes by car.
The immediate vicinity provides numerous opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing (category 1and 2), canoeing and kayaking and offers an extremely rich variety of beautiful villages and examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The town is also an hour away from the nearest ski slopes and an hour to the nearest beach.
